    Hello Zizaco, I'm a total beginner on this field, but i'm really pumped about making my own video game (as a hobby). Your video gave all the elements I was looking for. Thanks a lot for this video, it has been so helpfull and interresting !! <3 I think i will use Aseprite though, because it is a single software that handles everything from start to end. I think that's the best choice if you start and don't want to spend too much time learning how to use softwares.

    While it is true you don’t need high fidelity graphics… but the 2d examples you gave, have some of the best art in any games. Art is important, high fidelity or not. We have yet to see an indie hit where all art was generated by the developer using AI.

    *trashes Aseprite for no valid reason nor backs it up truthfully or logically* *"Best artists use PS"* *I doesn't use PS anymore because is "pricey"* Dude. BRUH. Did you seriously record yourself and heard or processed NOTHING of what you said and went "Yeah, good enough *upload*"? For your line of thinking ALONE + plus your B roll in favour of PS tells me that all the art you attempt to do is solely to serve an end and NOT for the actual joy of doing art. And is plain for all to see too in the end result. As salty as this made me, allow me to leave my 2 cents, just like many others ripping you a new one in the comments. 1. Aseprite is TRULY GOOD, and the BEST specialty pixelart making program on the MARKET, EASY. Believe me when I say I LOOKED. And is not even expensive and can be found on Steam for cheaper than on their main site when sales are on. Heck, is just 20 USD for a variety of versions of it including a Steam key and they have option of it running on Linux. Krita too runs on Linux, but I do think PS doesn't support Linux. And it has "Overwhelmingly Positive" ratings on Steam for a reason! I tried Pixilart's own editor, Pixel Studio and dotpict as well, they are not as robust. Krita is fine and will do the job, but Aseprite is faster to iterate in once you get the hang of it. Krita is ideal as a one program to do it all in, and if you know it better, then use it over Aseprite. Photoshop tho? Adobe has a HISTORY of being utterly shit at fixing bugs that have been there for YEARS, no goodwill with the artist community, genuinely greedy and have been puping out trash art applications for YEARS. Everyone in the artist community heard of the fiasco with Fresco, too. Prices are almost unjustified and every artist either gets their PS cracked, HAS to use it for their job (which is utter bull), or got a massive discounted bundle as a student at an arts uni and basically cheesed their system to keep using it cheaper. What's more, Adobe is having the AUDACITY to introduce AI tools into PS. Is not all bad, but since too many companies are shoehorning AI tools in everything now, I wouldn't chuck it to anything else but Adobe being greedy and desperate. An ACTUALLY artist recommended program Clip Studio Paint did introduce AI tools too, but they removed them due to backlash at least. And Clips pricing for what it does? So so much more reasonable, and it goes on sale multiple times a year at practically a bragain. But aside for all that, your B roll during that section is outright PATHETIC. Sure, go ahead, use the easy route to make your game, use asset packs, edit them, but do not DARE stare me dead in the face to say PS is better when what you really want is to barely draw. You cannot just show me you "struggling" with Aseprite tryin'a shade a damn CIRCLE, and then show me PS doing the same thing except the program does is ALL FOR YOU! Are you tryn'a bullshit us?! Do you really think you can fog my sight from THIS MONSTROSITY?! What you did in PS doesn't even look half decent! You put NO EFFORT in THAT! Nada! Zilch! And I do, however, get it. Everyone wants nice stuff for themselves and the easy way is always valid. Go ahead, take the shortcut. But I will not tolerate the audacity of me, an artist, looking for a recommendation/suggestion of new programs to try out, to show me how "easy" is to make art in PS LIKE THIS. This is NOT what I came here for in good faith. This is straight up a BAD way to argument your choice. 1. TL:DR Aseprite is genuinely good, Krita is a good sub, Photoshop has no business being mentioned as "better". 2. Pixel Joint is the most established pixel specific art platform, yes, but it is not the only one, nor taking "top tier" artists choice of program for granted. Artists use what they can, what they afford, what they can in good faith stand behind, and what they just simply prefer. There's a myriad of different art styles, techniques and methods, and an artist chooses their program to facilitate that. I used Paint Tool SAI for the longest time because I liked the no fluff interface, easy to get started (doesn't take forever to boot like *cough* PS *cough*), and it was also simply the first I properly used for a long time. Will you like it? There is no guarantee. What suits me doesn't always, if ever, suit somebody else. Much more so if we also take into account programs with an editable "layout" (or also known as "workspace" in some), where the same program can look wildly different for each person. More than that, why the heck even go straight for the pro's picks?! Why even look at pros to begin with?! Your art doesn't look to me like is comparable to theirs in quality, so why not look at people in the same "bracket" of experience as yourself and both see how you can improve your art from somebody far closer to you in skill and nowere as hard to figure out from a pro, and also see what they use merely as a suggestion, pure curiosity to see what the current market has to offer. I always liked Krita's pattern making mode (for making tiling wallpapers etc.) and knew no other program that does that. Stuff like that. 2. TL:DR Why try to use specifically the same program as "top picks" when your needs will inevitably be different from theirs? And why go straight to pros, when you should compare and learn from somebody with a similar skill level as yourself? 3. The most glaring issues I see is: ... If you struggle drawing individual pixels... Why the fuck are you doing pixel art in the first place? Or better yet, if you truly want to make pixel art, why the fuck you draw on such big canvases?! With so many colors too?! Draw on an 8x8, 16x16, 32x32, and suddenly, your issue just *poofs* otta existence because is so so much easier to refine something on a smaller scale. And you shall see very quickly the every pixel counted ALWAYS. That's the damn CHARM OF PIXEL ART! Is a mosaic of squares that creates a pretty picture, instead of layering brushstrokes upon brushstroken upon more marks and lines etc. Every pixel matters SO MUCH that in a 16x16, with a trained eye you can literally SEE when you place one single wrong pixel. It bothers me immediatelly when I am trying to animate an 8x8 sprite and the pixel I put down makes the motion less readable. So, I undo, place another right next, and see if is good. By trial and error, I have to find the best solution to my motion of choice. Same applies for literally everything pixel. Do a small canvas like a 8x8 in a 1-bit type palette (aka black and white), I'd like to see you try. Genuinely. 3. TL:DR Why do pixel art if you dislike drawing each pixel? If you insist sticking with pixel art, why not try smaller canvases that are more manageable? Why not less colors? Why tackle big pieces that take time when you struggle with the simple act of putting each pixel down?

I think this guy just wants clicks cause I actually don't think people probably use that too if there making sprites ....... Well, ok, for a 2D platformer you don't necessarily need a game engine as backend, and things like SDL are sufficient as basis. But dont try to write your own 3D game engine. This is a very inefficient time sink if the actual intend is to make a game.

  • @Squirrelsquid

    Pixel Joint member since 2005 here. First, thank you for bringing up our little community. However, your bit about "one click" pixel art, is a bit misleading, they have poor clustering and are overdithered. Pretty much every top of the line pixel artist does their art pixel by pixel, most of the time. Index painting has it's uses, especially for game assets, but over-relying on it, is poor practice. I can't speak for the viability of Aseprite, as I am a photoshop user since over 25 years, but bringing up the Hall of Fame on Pixel Joint as evidence that "pr0" artists don't use Aseprite, when the majority of Hall of Fame pieces are from before Aseprite even existed in the way it exists today. Furthermore, a great artist is not a great artist because he uses photoshop or any other tool. A great artist can achieve great results no matter the tool.

    • @Zizaco
      @Zizaco Місяць тому

      Hey Squirrelsquid, thanks for the comment! I agree that the example I showed was not ideal. I posted a video drawing a metal slug character that better illustrates my point. I believe that being a talented artist is not necessarily dependent on the tools used. However, it is important to consider that the tools can hinder one's potential and may increase the time required to create art, thereby potentially slowing down the artist's growth.

    And now for aseprite: It simply has a different workflow. A bit like OpenToonz. Opentoonz has pretty sparse drawing capabilities, and many users open feature requests with better painting capabilities, and some sometimes get implemented. But OT simply expects a different workflow, it expects the user to know how to draw, or at the very least, knows that OT is also a compositing program that can take assets from all sorts of sources and animate with it. So, even though it cannot paint well, it will allow you use digitized painted pictures, either reallife scans, or from programs like Krita. The only snag in this comparison with Aseprite is: That while you could do the roughs and other design steps in a different program, then use the finalized draft to finish it in aseprite... These 'different programs' can already work as 'pixeling tools' too. Even GIMP can do that. So, it certainly has a weakness in that workflow...but if you still followed it, especially using reallife scans, and 'inked and painted' those in aseprite (like one can do in opentoonz) then aseprite has all the tools you need. You prefer the other tools, like Krita and Photoshop more because they offer and easier "drafting" process, and that just makes the difference for you, because you need it, for some reason or another. My guess is that you don't have a clear vision and experiment with these tools to then arrive at something that pleases you, and that's fine... but for aseprite (and opentoonz) that is not the workflow they expect. OT has crappy drafting tools because it expects the artist to know how to draw, that's why it is pretty empty on the 'painterly brushes' and leans more into 'precise inking' (although nowadays OT has a bunch of painterly brushes, but still very few 'makes drawing easier tools') And aseprite expects you to know what you want, it really is as simple as that... it doesn't include the kind of 'experimental drafting' where you add filters, sliders, and automation, it only gives you the tools to 'make pixelized' the design you, at the stage of firing up the program, have decided on, the final step, so to speak. That all said, that's just what aseprite expects, if you have a clear vision then photoshop and krita still work just as well, I just wanted to explain the assumption of the program. It's not bad, it just doesn't intend to be a drafting/design program, but a 'realization of the final form'.

    The pros from back then, you know, the ones living and coding and creating in a low tech world, the 80s,90s,00s would have used this without batting an eye. When you see old Street Fighter or Darkstalkers art, it wasn't immediately done in a pixel program, no, they actually drew them as paper animation cels first, scanned those, shrank them etc. They did everything they could to make their work easier, it just happened that 'easier' back then is now considered 'painstaking' or 'budget breaking' (many couldn't even use their home computers for development and had to use workstations) There is something true about 'limitation breeds creativity', but all great painters, especially those from the renaissance, had few limits, at least if they were able to afford the tools, the pigments, oils, etc and they still created mind blowing artworks. To create something good... it ultimately is the diligence AND the personal artistic view of the artist who does it. Anyway, tl; dr: I'd say 99% of all oldschool old people game devs and artists would have leaped for joy at the tools we have today and would consider none of them 'cheating'.

      gimp is great. I find Krita better for pixel art specifically. But for 2d art in general, gimp is definitely a great choice.

    For pixel illustrations krita and Photoshop looks so powerful and unbelievable, but I still miss a good tool for animating npcs goodly like aseprite. Thanks to you now I know how I can draw most of backgrounds and scenarios for my games without spending alot of time on it, I didnt expect photoshop could do all this magic with less clicks.
